Hello. My name is Marie, and I’m a coloring addict.
A few years ago, I purchased my first adult coloring book and several sets of markers; it’s been an obsession ever since. Since then, I’ve become increasingly frustrated with the sheer volume of coloring books available that I personally found unsuitable for coloring. The designs were too intricate, too simple, or just didn’t seem to be made for coloring. I began taking advantage of my training as a graphic designer to create my own designs to color, which eventually became my first book, Modern Mandalas.
Many of us work long hours, have families to take care of, and find it hard to set aside time for ourselves. Coloring has become a way for me to unwind and relax, soothing my nerves and providing me with an outlet that satisfies both my creative and analytical sides. Choosing my palette and working toward a vision provide a wonderful – and welcome – distraction from everyday stress and responsibilities. I tend to gravitate towards more abstract designs that offer the freedom to use any colors I want. When coloring a still life or landscape, much of your palette is dictated by reality – sky is blue, grass is green, the sun is yellow. With abstract designs like mine, you’re only limited by your imagination. Nothing is predetermined, which gives you the freedom to create anything!
For me, coloring is so much more than just a creative hobby. If I’m dealing with problems or challenges in my life, I find that coloring allows my mind to focus, and I will often come up with ideas or solutions while I’m working. Other times it’s a social activity; something to do with friends when we get together. The best part is the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment I feel when I complete a design. I’ve started framing my favorite finished pieces and hanging them on my office wall.
